The movie begins with a prologue showing the effects of global warming on the Earth's climate. A climatologist, Dr. Jack Hall (played by Dennis Quaid), is studying the effects of climate change at a research station in Antarctica. His team discovers that the melting of polar ice caps could lead to a shutdown of the thermohaline circulation, which would trigger a new ice age.
