Born William Steward Robinson on February 19, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, Smokey Robinson grew up in a musical family. He began singing in his church choir and formed his first group, The Five Souls, at the age of 11. After changing the group's name to The Miracles, they began performing locally and eventually caught the attention of Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records.
