The movie is loosely based on the 14th-century witch trials in Europe, particularly in Switzerland. The story revolves around Lord of Mónsanto (Nicolas Cage), a knight who returns from the Crusades and is accused of witchcraft. He teams up with a young nobleman, Fray Jorge (Jay Baruchel), to clear his name and escape the clutches of the Church. Along the way, they encounter a mysterious woman, Angélique (Elizabeth Shue), who is believed to be a witch.
