The story takes place in rural Japan in the post-war era and follows the adventures of two sisters, Satsuki (10) and Mei (5), who move to the countryside with their father to be closer to their mother, who is recovering from illness in a nearby hospital. As they settle into their new home, they soon discover that the forest surrounding their house is inhabited by magical creatures, including the titular Totoro, a friendly forest spirit.
