The movie follows the story of Henry DeTamble (Brendan Fraser), a geologist and professor at Boston University. He receives a mysterious stone that belonged to his missing grandfather, who was also a geologist. The stone leads Henry, along with his student Min Dachsen (Mikaela Miller) and her brother Ian (Alexander Siddig), on a perilous journey through a volcanic eruption in Iceland, which takes them to the center of the Earth.
