The film opens with Dick Harper (Tim Allen) being laid off from his lucrative job, which sends shockwaves through the family's comfortable suburban lifestyle. As Dick struggles to find new employment, the couple is forced to downsize and adapt to a more modest life. Jane (Téa Leoni) takes on a job at a local lingerie store, while Dick becomes increasingly desperate and starts selling questionable products to make ends meet.
