Adobe Flash Player was first released in 1996 by Macromedia, a company that developed multimedia software. The player quickly gained popularity as a way to play Flash-based games and watch animations on the web. In 2005, Adobe acquired Macromedia and continued to develop and release new versions of Flash Player.
