The act of squaring was an act of magnification—small deviations compounded into larger ones, the subtle tremors of performance made plainly visible. She felt the problem’s shape under her palms: a valley and ridge of deviations, some students clustered close to the mean like sheep grazing near a fence, others scattered like startled birds.
